A useful fit for

A measured shallow location or exact documented installed replacement, when modest output and tray size suit the food.

The main tradeoff

Wide body, modest cooking output and conflicting published height require checking actual fit.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Is it useful for a shallow counter even though it is 24 inches wide?

Yes, if depth is your real constraint and you have enough width. The documented body is 12⅞ inches deep, but include ventilation, door access and front-edge placement. Published height figures differ, so confirm the actual unit for a close fit.

Can I mount it under a cabinet or use a trim kit?

The manual identifies JXA019K for hanging, and JX827SFSS or JX830SFSS for built-in use. These are different systems; the exact kit, instructions, cabinet and supports must agree.

Is it suitable when I need high output and large dishes?

Its 800-watt cooking rating and 10⅝-inch tray make those requirements important to reconsider. The shallow body does not make it a high-output or broad-tray microwave.

The GE Profile PEM31SFSS is an earlier shallow-body microwave whose appeal is installation flexibility rather than high cooking output. It can be useful for a replacement where depth is the constraint, or where an exact GE hanging or trim kit solves a space problem. Its 800-watt output and relatively small turntable are the compromises. A shallow case does not make this a narrow appliance.

Depth is the reason to examine this model

The exact GE product page lists a body 24 inches wide, 12⅞ deep and 11¾ high, and says the model is no longer being manufactured. An older GE catalog instead gives 12⅛ inches of exterior height, so confirm the actual unit when height is tight. The shape is distinctive: wide across the counter while comparatively shallow front to back. That can help in a particular kitchen, but it is not the same thing as a generally tiny microwave.

Measure the dimension that actually constrains you. If the available width is narrow, the shallow case will not fix it. If the main problem is how far an oven projects onto a counter, this shape deserves a comparison. Also think about the door opening and a place for hot food. A model that looks tidy when closed can still interfere with a neighboring appliance or an awkward corner during use.

The plate is a separate measurement

GE's exact specifications identify a 10⅝-inch glass tray in a 1.1-cubic-foot cavity. That means the broad exterior should not be read as proof of a broad rotating plate area. Compare your everyday crockery, including rims, handles and covers. The shape through the doorway and the room needed to grip a hot bowl remain important even when a dish fits the stated cavity dimensions.

The documented turntable on/off control can be useful for a particular cooking arrangement, but it is not permission to overload the cavity or ignore the manual. A stationary dish changes how you manage the food; it does not make an oversized container an appropriate fit. For most buyers, checking normal rotation first is the simpler way to avoid a disappointing purchase.

Eight hundred watts is a deliberate tradeoff

The cooking rating is 800 watts; GE separately lists 1,200 watts of electrical input. If you are used to package directions written for a more powerful microwave, check the package's guidance for the oven you are using. Do not assume every dish can be corrected by one universal time multiplier. The food, starting condition and serving shape still affect the result.

Our judgment is that the power compromise can be worthwhile when the installation solves a real kitchen problem. It is less persuasive if you have an unrestricted counter and want the most direct match for higher-output meal directions. In that case, compare models with the output you need rather than paying primarily for the PEM31SFSS's shallow form and installation options.

Understand the three placement routes

The PEM31 manual names JXA019K for under-cabinet hanging and JX827SFSS or JX830SFSS for the stainless model's built-in installation. These are separate from simply placing the oven on an open counter. A hanging kit is not a decorative trim frame, and a trim frame is not a universal shelf-mounting system.

For open-counter use, the manual recommends three inches at each side and above, plus one inch behind; it also calls for the door front to be at least three inches back from the counter edge. These countertop instructions must not be substituted for the installation procedure supplied with an approved kit. An existing opening may need changes even when the old and new oven belong to the same general brand.

Sensor reheating and daily controls

Sensor cooking is documented for this exact model. It is a useful convenience if your portions vary and you want help selecting an initial heating cycle. It is not a reason to ignore the instructions for food, coverings and amounts. For a familiar small snack, a direct timed setting may be faster to choose and easier to adjust.

There is no confirmed mute feature in the exact evidence used here. Nor should the model be treated as connected simply because a general SmartHQ or voice-assistant promotion appears elsewhere on a manufacturer's page. The buying decision rests on the documented microwave controls and installation provisions, not a site-wide marketing panel.

How your answers change the recommendation

“I have a shallow location and can allow extra width.” This is a good reason to investigate the PEM31SFSS. Confirm the complete operating space and door access, then decide whether its output and tray work for your meals.

“I want to free the counter using an approved hanging kit.” There is a documented route, but the actual kit and mounting instructions must suit your cabinet. Do not improvise supports from the dimensions alone.

“I often heat large family dishes or need at least 1,100 watts.” It is the wrong direction. The installation advantages do not remove a mismatch in the core cooking or dish requirements.

“I am buying a specific earlier listing.” Confirm the model code, seller condition, tray, installation accessories and return terms. The discontinued manufacturing status does not establish stock or coverage for any individual offer.

Our assessment

The PEM31SFSS is most valuable as a solution to a measured space or replacement problem. Its limitations are clear enough to decide before buying: broad exterior width, modest microwave output and a tray that still needs checking against your own plate. Choose it when the installation benefit is real and the meal routine fits; keep comparing when you simply want a roomy, powerful general-purpose countertop microwave.
