The Panasonic NN-CD87KS HomeCHEF is for a buyer who wants a microwave to brown and bake as well as reheat. It combines a 1.2-cu.-ft., 1,000-W inverter microwave with convection, air frying and a broiler. The tradeoff is a more involved cooking and cleaning routine, plus a larger operating space than the body dimensions suggest.

Buy it when browning is a real part of the routine

A plain microwave can warm the center of a meal but does not provide the same dry, browned finish as an oven mode. That distinction is the reason to consider the HomeCHEF. If you regularly reheat a slice that you want crisp again, bake a small dish or finish a browned topping, its additional heating modes address a genuine need.

If all you want is hot leftovers, those extra modes may add little. A simpler sensor microwave could make everyday timing and cleanup easier. List the actual meals for which you would use convection, air fry or broil before paying for the idea of four appliances in one. Replacing several appliances also means one cavity must handle their jobs in sequence; you cannot assume it will microwave a side dish while independently baking something else.

Panasonic describes broil-plus-microwave and convection-plus-microwave combinations. These are specific programs with their own cookware and accessory rules. They do not mean you can mix any two functions, any tray and any food package at will.

Accessories are part of the cooking method

The glass tray, enamel tray, wire rack and air-fry basket have distinct roles. The original US manual provides a mode-by-mode utensil chart and shows where the supplied accessories belong. For example, the enamel tray and wire rack are not to be left in for ordinary microwave-only cooking. A microwave-safe plastic bowl is not automatically suitable for convection, broiling or a combination cycle.

That creates a small but important workflow: select the mode, choose the permitted dish, arrange the correct accessories and find somewhere safe for the hot parts afterward. A drawer or shelf for the basket and rack belongs in your space plan. If swapping and washing accessories sounds annoying for the meals you actually eat, a separate simple microwave may be more satisfying.

There is useful flexibility for a small household that wants one countertop cooking center. But do not interpret the nominal cavity or a marketing photograph as a promise that your favorite baking pan, with handles, fits and rotates in every mode. Confirm the complete dish and the accessory arrangement required for that recipe.

Counter space includes ventilation and cooling

The maker lists the body at 22 1/16 inches wide, 13 33/64 inches high and 17 23/32 inches deep. The documented countertop guidance adds 6 inches above, 4 inches behind and 2 inches at each side for the ordinary placement arrangement. A narrow shelf that fits the body alone is therefore a very different proposition from an open counter.

Hot-air modes also change how the appliance behaves after cooking. Panasonic notes a protective cooling fan can continue after a cycle, depending on the mode and cooking time. Muting beeps does not stop that fan. Plan the location around heat and airflow, and keep a landing area for a hot tray rather than surrounding the oven tightly with other appliances.

The nominal 14.2-inch turntable helps describe the format, but it is not a certified maximum pan diameter. Dish shape, handles, loading opening and the chosen accessories all matter. For a fixed cabinet project, use the separate approved trim installation rather than applying countertop gap arithmetic as a cutout specification.

It is still a capable everyday microwave

The microwave output is 1,000 W, with inverter control, Sensor Reheat and additional automatic programs. Sensor reheating is useful for a supported chilled meal when you do not want to estimate time. It remains a food-specific routine: the right covering, dry surfaces and appropriate portion still matter.

For very small items, drinks or food outside the sensor instructions, use the relevant manual or dedicated program instead. Automatic timing does not remove the need to arrange the food sensibly, check the result and allow standing time. We have not tested this oven's temperature uniformity, air-fryer crispness or baking consistency, so the mode list should not be mistaken for measured performance rankings.

The control arrangement combines function buttons with a dial. It is appropriate for someone comfortable selecting modes and confirming settings. A buyer who wants a number pad and one familiar reheating button should try this interaction before assuming that more capability means less effort.

Check the edition before choosing a trim kit or door behavior

Panasonic's US trim finder distinguishes the plain NN-CD87KS from the later NN-CD87KSATH reference. It lists NN-TK81KCS for the former and NN-TK81KC for the ATH/KSC group. These similar names should not be treated as interchangeable by appearance. Match the actual oven label, kit code and installation document.

The later US manual adds a Timer/Clock door-open control, and Panasonic's model-specific safety guidance describes the ATH release sequence. Earlier instructions describe a different panel. The date of an online document is not proof of the edition in a seller's box. If one-handed access or a particular hot-food door lock matters, inspect the actual controls.

A documented Beep Off option can reduce electronic signals. It does not make the oven silent, especially during convection or cooling. Panasonic also states that the broiler is not a normal toaster replacement: it can brown one side of bread, which is a different breakfast workflow from dropping slices into a toaster.

Our recommendation

Shortlist the NN-CD87KS when browning and baking are real priorities, you have the full operating space and you accept accessory changes. Choose a simpler microwave when fast reheating and straightforward cleanup dominate. For a cabinet installation or an accessibility requirement, settle the exact edition and parts first. The value comes from the cooking tasks it genuinely replaces in your kitchen, not from counting modes.
