Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Will the medium size solve a shallow-counter problem?

Not automatically: the body is 19 7/16 inches deep. It mainly saves width compared with the large966S.

The Panasonic NN-SN766S is a 1.6-cu.-ft. inverter microwave that gives you1,250-W cooking output without the width of a 2.2-cu.-ft. model. It is a useful format for everyday plates and sensor reheating. Its depth is still substantial, and buyers planning a trim-kit installation must use the exact model-specific kit information rather than a conflicting shared specification table.

Where it sits between compact and family-size microwaves

The reason to consider this model is not simply “more capacity.” It is whether your actual dinner plate or bowl feels crowded in a smaller oven. The NN-SN766S offers a wider cavity than many compact formats while retaining a body less than 22 inches wide. That can suit a household that heats ordinary meals individually rather than looking for the largest possible cavity.

Panasonic's exact owner manual gives the body as 21 7/8 inches wide,11 15/16 inches high and 19 7/16 inches deep. Compare the depth carefully. Moving down from a 2.2-cu.-ft. Panasonic may save width and height without freeing much front-to-back space. If a shallow counter is the real constraint, a medium capacity label alone will not solve it.

The cavity measures16 7/16 inches wide,9 inches high and18 1/2 inches deep. A tall covered bowl could therefore pose a different problem from a broad plate. Measure your complete container with its lid and handles, then verify the opening and rotation path. We have not adopted a tray diameter from a neighboring model, and the interior box dimensions do not establish a maximum usable dish size.

Why a leftovers routine is a good fit

The exact manual documents Sensor Reheat and Sensor Cook. These functions make the most sense when you frequently heat cooked refrigerated meals and would prefer not to estimate a new time for each portion. If most tasks are a cup of coffee or a small ingredient, evaluate manual timing and reduced power first; the sensor menu may be a secondary convenience.

For sensor cooking to be useful, the preparation has to match the program. Follow the quantity, covering and moisture instructions in the manual. Dry the cavity and the outside of the container as directed, and do not interrupt the sensing stage simply to see whether the food is warm. A sensor routine is a defined process, not permission to treat every kind of food the same way.

A meal with components of different density may still need stirring, rearrangement and standing time. The presence of an inverter and sensor does not establish a laboratory result for a particular frozen dinner. What is documented is the control system and the supported routines; the final food still needs attention.

High output does not mean every job needs full power

Panasonic specifies1,250 W cooking output and separately lists 1,460 W,12.3 A consumption at 120 V,60 Hz. The first helps you interpret cooking directions. The latter and the installation instructions govern the electrical arrangement. Do not treat the larger consumption number as extra cooking output.

When replacing a weaker microwave, learn the new timing for your usual food in small steps. A reduced setting may be more useful than a short burst at maximum output when heating a delicate sauce or working through a dense portion. For defrosting, follow the weight-based program and rearrangement guidance rather than assuming the inverter removes every cold center.

The numeric membrane controls offer direct time entry, Quick30, Keep Warm and the dedicated sensor functions. A person who already likes number pads may find that arrangement familiar. Someone who specifically wants a dial should choose a documented dial model instead of assuming every Panasonic uses the same control layout.

Electronic signals can be muted, but machinery still makes sound

Panasonic's exact-family sound guidance includes NN-SN766 and documents a Beep Off choice. That is relevant if an electronic completion signal would wake someone nearby. It is not a measurement of the fan, rotating tray or door action. A quiet-hours requirement should be separated into “no alert beeps” and “low mechanical noise,” because this review confirms only the former convenience.

The 2016 manual describes electronic child lock rather than a physical hot-food door-lock procedure. Actual retail editions can differ. Check the panel and matching supplied instructions when a specific door-release behavior is essential, especially for a user with limited dexterity. The safety feature name by itself is too vague for that decision.

The trim-kit information needs model-specific reading

The exact manual supports cabinet installation with a proper kit and has separate tables for the766S and966S. For the NN-SN766S, it names27-inch NN-TK722S and 30-inch NN-TK732S options. The maker's finder uses SS-suffixed kit names for this family. Confirm the full model-and-kit combination with the applicable installation instructions before ordering parts or cutting the cabinet.

This matters because the shared online766S/966S specification table contains mistakes: one model heading is mistyped and some outside dimensions and kit rows are duplicated across columns. Using the large model's copied row could lead to the wrong opening or trim frame. The exact manual's model-specific measurements take precedence in this review.

For countertop placement, the earlier manual requires side and top clearances, plus a setback from the counter edge. A body-width gap is not the operating space. Plan for removing a hot plate as well as for cooling the appliance. A model that can have a trim kit still needs the correct installation route for its chosen location.

Our recommendation

Keep the NN-SN766S on the shortlist for ordinary dinner plates, sensor reheating, inverter control and a preference for number pads. Look elsewhere if shallow depth is essential, if you require a confirmed dial, or if you cannot resolve a proposed cabinet installation. Panasonic's support page still documents the model, but a support label does not establish the availability or condition of a particular seller's unit.
